The diagnosis comes with many issues and decisions to be made regarding intervention, treatment and outcomes. Education is a key to understanding and it is vitally important that you find that information from reliable sources. Even as a nurse, I was baffled when the words came tumbling out of the physician’s mouth. I was glad to have my husband by my side and I took notes. I suggest you take someone to do this for you and in fact I have often provided that service by writing down what is being said so you (the patient) later can refresh in your mind what you heard or thought you heard and maybe what you missed. I also it is important to share your diagnosis with those closest to you and to determine what you well tell those on the periphery.
With that diagnosis- changes follow. Changes in your life, your time, your schedule and your routine and your private time, makes you feel like you are spinning out of control. There may also be financial issues and issues as to what the future holds.
Treatment comes with its own baggage. What does this treatment mean to me, how will I feel, can I work, what are the side effects? These are all life-altering events that you will be facing. If I do have surgery, what will it look like, will I still be able to wear clothes comfortably and will my partner find me attractive. The choices are mind boggling but learning more about what you are facing and working with your team is important. Talk and ask questions.
A little known fact is after treatment and completion of what constitutes your game plan with cancer, is what now? Yes, I celebrate and rejoice but I am at yet another crossroad. My life has been revolving around the cancer. Every day involved some aspect of my treatment whether it involved appointments, blood work, and follow- up, physical therapy, nutrition or support. Today, I have finished but now I need to regain my life. Not as easy as it sounds. All that attention and time and now I have a free hour, what next? I may be a cancer survivor but I am also a member of your team and I can help, I am with you –beside you, behind you and for as long as you need. With this in mind I hope you can more confidently face what lies ahead.
