I know that I felt at a loss when I received the news as I was told to decide between a lumpectomy or a mastectomy. I may be a nurse but I had become a patient and I was confused and this would not be the only time during this walk that I would be ..CONFUSED. The nurse called to confirm the date that I would start chemo and what chemo I was to get. It was not the combination I had been told so I questioned it. The doctor called me back and stated I could have either one off the combinations and I could decide. Yet again, CONFUSED.
Seven years out, I talk to patients and with patients about what they are going through or about to go through. There are always lots of questions and fear which is very typical. Don't we all fear what we don't know? Someone was recently quoting statistics from a study in China and how Self breast exam doesn't work and it hadn't changed their numbers for breast cancer. Well, you and I both know that statistics can be skewed anyway you need it to be but also breast cancer is not the number one or two health problem in China and also their health care programs or government run. I continue to reitterate that we check our cars by checking the tires and oil and filling it with gas, so why not do that for ourselves- men and women alike.
