I am definitely not the first or the last person that will talk about enjoying the holidays. That includes all the goodies that look so darn appealing. My husband is allergic to nuts so I gravitate towards all those luscious items that have nuts that I can't normally have. It is easy to hit overfull in short order but if I have learned nothing else in all these 60+ years, it is that too much of a good thing is just that - toooooo much. Whether you are talking vacations or anything that is fun, it is better to quit while you are still having fun so that you will want to do it again in the future. So some of those holiday temptations in moderation are all right, don't skip meals so that you can have more. Eating light will make you feel better in the long run. Don't run to the dessert table first either. Fill up with as many vegetables that you like first but also don't avoid the foods you like. The new American Plate is much different than it used to be and worth going to Google to see the changes. Eating at a slow pace is a better alternative as well. Long ago, I realized how you step in tune with the speed of the person eating with you which means I have trouble sitting by my minister that can break the sound barrier time by how fast he eats. I also realize that my husband eats way to fast for me as well. No, I don't avoid eating with him but at least I am aware of how fast he eats and I have to keep aware of my speed and put down my fork in between bites. Another quick tip that most anyone should be aware of but we often ignore is: step away from the buffet or munchies or whatever is there. It is also very easy to keep eating beyond what you really want or need when it is close in reach. This is the same reason I don't buy treats for home. My husband is a late night eater of pie and ice cream and such but not that I am a saint but I just don't sleep well if I do eat late. Last but not least, if you are to bring a dish to the gathering, make sure it is something you like as well as being a good snack that you enjoy. I recently had Italian Nachos and I can't wait till I can get them again. Yum! Well, temptations abound during the holidays and not just in the food line, avoid the over abundance of food ,drink, over buying, over partying, and packing your schedule so full that you forget that the joy of the holiday is not in all of these things but in the real celebration of the season. Love your families and enjoy the joys that go along with your time together. Making it a great day every day! S
