Over the years, I have done many health fairs in various capacities related to my nursing career. Some of those have been in connection with my current job and then again many have been with students or just service in helping with flu shots and the like. Today I will be going as part of my job and giving information to those that are willing to stop and listen and/ or ask questions. It is interesting to see those that want to stop and learn, those that avoid eye contact and those that give you a laundry list of concerns that only their pcp can address with further testing and evaluations. Everyone likes free materials and those go quite rapidly so my moral is put the information on what ever free item you are dispersing, short and sweet and to the point. We are a drive through society aren't we? We want fixed now, we want answers now, and we want information now. Texting and internet are the mainstays of the day. I am always encouraged when you can see that the person is listening and asking valuable questions and hopeful with what information you can give them. There have been health fairs where you really have to step out and make a connection or the people will just filter by. Colleges are one of the arenas that you have to make that connection and after some small talk and jokes then short and sweet, I relay the information. I have been privileged to get to meet and greet throughout our community and to offer my help as their need arises. I recently had a call from Florida from a person that had been at one of those gatherings that I presented at, and even at a distance, I listened and could offer some direction in what was next in their pursuit of health. Information is power and knowledge is the key. The days are gone where we can sit back and wait for the doctor to call by the end of the week. We need to be informed consumers and get the proper knowledge via health fairs and the like. So today, I will be at the event waiting and hoping to answer your questions and give you information. Make it a great day! S
