While placement for a breast MRI requires you to lie face down and your breast will actually go into open areas on the table. This is a special part of the machine for breast MRI. You will be asked to wear a hospital gown and removal of your bra and top as well as what we have previously mentioned. You may also be injected with a contrast media/ solution that improves the MRI image which means they may start an IV on you before you start the actual test. You will be covered and positioned so that you are comfortable and then the table or platform you are on will slide into the machine and again you will be face down. You may hear sounds like roller skating around you but all is fine including any clacking sound. They do give you ear plugs to help while you are in there. If you are to have a breast MRI with biopsy, they will pull you back out on the moving table and position a side frame against your breast that needs the biopsy and their will be a marker and they can plot exactly where the biopsy will be and then anesthesize it and then they will take a needle and take the biopsy. You will not be able to feel that needle other than possibly a little pressure and when that is done they will put pressure on a bandage to the site and then possibly a more restrictive bandage and ice and you will be sent home. (Of course, you get to go put your clothes back on). You will also be able to resume activities within reason. Today would not be the day to have a tennis match or sweep your house but within reason get back to what you are doing. It may take a week to ten days to get the result back and this is a difficult time to sit and wait and to think. With that in mind, I suggest keeping occupied/busy/ and find things to laugh about and do until you get what is your next step if there is a step. You may very well just continue to be followed every so many months or maybe at this point they would need some intervention. Having said all this, I wish you the best and hope this has helped to clarify what you would go through if having a MRI or MRI with biopsy. In the meantime, make it a great day! S
I am often asked about MRI and how they do a breast MRI and so I will briefly detail what it is. MRI or otherwise known as Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a test that lets you/doctor see detailed pictures of the inside of your body. You are actually put into a tube that uses strong magnets and radio waves to form an MRI image. The magnets that are used will require you to remove your watch, jewelry and any other metal objects. I normally tell my patients that if they can wear pants that have no zipper then they can keep their pants on.
