Recent news out is that "dose dense"a chemotherapy improves survival in breast cancer patients. Now this is news coming from a clinical trial and what they mean when they talk about dose dense is just that you reduce the time between successive doses of the needed chemotherapy regimen and have found that this change helps improve the survival in women whose breast cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. This is not to say that conventional therapy is not effective, because it is but with this new information from this control group that followed the clinical trial regime, it was found that there appears to be a direct benefit and again for those women whose breast cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. It also may represent improved disease survival as well as overall survival rates. Another interesting aspect that was mentioned, was that side effects were no more severe in those patients with dose dense regimens than those that are doing conventional treatment. Along with that, we have new drugs that help patients tolerate treatment better and helps prevent serious side effects. Having said all of that this will be a study that soon will be published and at this point we are not sure if this will become the new standard of care but it is exciting and hopeful to see that we continue to strive to talk care of this awful disease. I am sure there will be more clinical trials and further study but hold onto hope in that we are looking at new changes but also need to make sure that the overall survival rate and benefits of dose dense continue to be studied.
