This is a question I am often asked when out teaching and that is if there is a higher chance of breast cancer due to having implants? The evidence in fact shows it might actually be lower. Lumps can still be detected on mammogram and sometimes we can just feel it (palpable). It is still diagnosed the same way as any breast cancer by doing a biopsy. Sometimes, the biopsy can be by needle depending where the lump is and of course we don't want to stick a needle into the implant. We are extremely careful always but in particular with breast implants and are fully aware of the need to do so. Treatment options are the same. It is very important to follow the schedule for mammograms and self breast exams as directed by your health care provider. That way you can actually monitor the changes more accurately. Of course you need to find a healthcare provider you trust and are comfortable with and that you feel you can ask your questions to and get the answers that will support your care and treatment. It is a great day ! S
